What Is Facing In Sewing?

Facing is an interesting and important yet misunderstood concept for beginning sewers. Facing can be used to finish seams, create them, or add stability to a garment opening such as along a neckline or armhole. I like using facings (when applicable) because they give my garments a nice clean finish and help the pieces lie nicely together.

Facing can be attached in one of three different methods: by hand, using a sewing machine, or with an overlock stitch on your serger. I will demonstrate how to sew each type below.

Instructions For Sewing A Hand-Attached Facing

Step 1)

Begin by placing the two pieces of fabric you are going to attach the facing to face-to-face.

Step 2)

Stitch 1/4" from the edge of the fabric, creating a seam that will serve as your guide for attaching the facing.

Keep the stitches on one side of this seam about twice as long as those on the other side. If you're using a thicker fabric, you may need to increase this measurement.

Step 3)

With the right sides together, fold the facing along the seam line and press it flat.

Step 4)

Pin one end of the facing over the edge of your garment with right sides together.

Step 5)

Stitch close to one edge, catching both layers in your stitching. You'll need to stretch the facing ever so slightly to get it over to the end of your seam line.

Step 6)

Trim away any excess fabric sticking out beyond your seam line and press this piece flat.

Step 7)

Turn the facing up along one side of your garment (right sides should still be together) and press it flat.

Step 8)

Stitch 1/4" from the edge, catching both layers in your stitching. If you're using a thicker fabric or need to reinforce the facing, increase this measurement.

Step 9)

Fold the facing up to meet your first line of stitching and press it flat. Repeat steps 7–9 on the other side of your garment, and you're done!
